I think your advice is spot on. At the end of the day, trolls are just attention seekers, and the best way to deal with them is to simply ignore them. I can see why some people find this tricky because they can be extremely inflammatory, but in the long run, it does bother them more if they realise they have no audience.

I think it also helps to remember that for every abuse spouting idiot, there are thousands of others who are really great people.
