If you've ever asked that question about a news story or an op-ed, you're in the right place.
Welcome to Surfette, a Weblog devoted to surfing only the good stuff. This month's focus is Election 2004.
From now through Nov. 2, Surfette's sole mission is to recommend the best sampling of news, information and commentary I can find about the American presidential contest, picking up the threads of my DNC coverage for the LA Times (free registration required).
Surfette confesses: I'm atoning for a September shamelessly devoted to reading political gossip and staying away from thornier issues. It's been appallingly easy, despite the newspapers and magazines all over my place. At this point, I've seen more in-depthy reporting on John Kerry’s “vertical hair” and George W. Bush’s hand gestures than on either of their health care planks. Wonkette's had more traditional media facetime than Colin Powell and I can't tell you damn thing about job outsourcing or Abu Ghraib, two stories that are harder to find than Mrs. Cheney. Mea maxima culpa.
If ever a presidential election has called for a foam-flecked public policy debate, it's this one. Please join me. I invite you to use this site to post your own recommendations for best election coverage and commentary. If you’re short on time, post a question and I'll look into it. Help me stay strong. I promise not to give in (too much) to campaign gossip and pony up data alongside rhetoric.
Vote with your keyboards: The media we consume can only be as good as the media we demand.
After all, who cares?
