Actually, the question that remains is why would everyone jump on board to promote Always On and Technorati? The response I've decided is best for me was suggested here.

Still think this thing is harmless and just promotes a blog or some cool people? This is about money. Ain't it always?

Take a look at what being on a Top Ten List does for a blog. Look closely at those ad prices girls. If you were in the top 100 list that could be YOU!


So, I really have to say....so much for supporting diversity. Nominate a blog"her" or a blog"shero". What happens if I don't find any women bloggers I feel worthy? What happens if I don't find any male bloggers either. I suppose the next complaint will be if less than 50 of them are women, even if the representative percentages match.

If you don't find any, don't nominate any. It's really quite simple. Seems to me all Lisa is saying is "Walk your talk."

i.e. if you go on about the lack of women being acknowledged, represented etc. etc. , then here's your chance to do something about it. That's it. End of story.

Personally, I'm more with MoJo and don't enjoy any of these Awards, Lists etc. etc. Much as I acknowledge they may deliver positive quantifiable results to people on them, it's hard for me to stomach them. I mean at this point the blog community has introduced more awards for itself than Hollywood!

Here's the issue: Do you or don't you think it makes sense for women to have a seat at this particular table? If you don't value the discussion at this table, as Mojo beautifully articulates she does not, then you can and should vote with your feet. Walk away, in loud silence and tag it to make sure your exit's for the record.

If you do value the discussion at this table, then I suggest you propose people you think should win. As I wrote above, the chance to compete often is determined by who makes the original lists as well as who decides final cut. In particular, given the appropriate renaming of this category, I'm eager to aim the expertise of this community toward expanding this list of nominees to include the entire community of open media contributors--founding mothers as well as founding fathers. Pioneers.

Well, I think there is another opportunity here. Blogher.org is about "creating" visibility for those not represented in these typically women unfriendly spaces.

I remember reading the eloquent recount of Jory Des Jardins on her lack of fit in an all male sales team. She didn't fit. Her approach to the world wasn't characteristically male enough. She was on the wrong team. What is she doing now? She's a free agent. Many women are making this choice and abandoning the push against corporate glass ceiling, and instead, doing their own thing.

Walking one's talk is a great message. If you want to create visibility which is what AlwaysOn and Technorati buddy up to do, then why wouldn't the Blogher community lead by example, again.

OK, I don't have time to finish this thought at the moment, but will complete the thought on my blog. I had planned to release such a post this AM, but missed that deadline. Tomorrow morning I'll offer my solution, or the beginning of a solution might be more accurate.

Time to enpower ourselves, and stop waiting for or asking for those who have hurt us in the past to do it. peace! don't be still!

The Anita Borg Institute for Women and Technology is proud to announce the CALL FOR NOMINATIONS for the 2005 Women of Vision Awards . The annual Women Of Vision Awards will be celebrated on Tuesday, October 18, 2005 at the Fairmont Hotel in San Jose, California in a premier event to recognize, highlight and celebrate extraordinary women of technology.

Building on over a quarter century of tradition, the Women of Vision Awards are a unique venue for organizations in the San Francisco Bay Area and Silicon Valley to highlight women making distinguished contributions to technology and the quality of life in their community, their companies and their world.

The three award categories are:

recognizes a woman who has contributed significantly to technology innovation. The innovation might be creating unusual and important technology or approaching developing technology in a significantly new and innovative way, such as by bringing diverse people and experiences together in the technology creation process. NOMINATE

Social Impact
recognizes a woman who developed technology with a significant impact on society and/or the community. These people are creating technologies that are changing our world in positive ways. NOMINATE

recognizes a woman who has led an important technology dev elopment or innovation, made a significant contribution to the technology industry, and someone who inspires others. NOMINATE

The Awards will be presented on October 18, 2005 at a Gala Event at the Fairmont Hotel in San Jose . The Women of Vision Awards honors women and institutions that embody the Institute's mission to increase the impact of women on all aspects of technology, and to increase the positive impact of technology on the lives of the world's women.

Appropriate nomination packages would include a resume or CV and a statement of merit. The nominator must also be able to furnish three letters of support upon request for the finalists. The statement of merit should be no longer than a page or two and address: 1) which of the three categories this nominee should be considered, 2) the nominees significant track record in leadership, innovation or social impact, and 3) making the case for the nominee as a woman of vision. The CV or resume needs to include an outline of the nominees work that should be considered as part of the award consideration.

Send in your nominations for deserving individuals for the 2005 Women of Vision Award by May 15, 2005 .

The Anita Borg event sounds interesting and a truly positive way to recognize achievement.

On the whole blogmercial for AOTechnorati thing, here's yet another brilliant observation from JoshP

Doesn't the whole silly idea of an "open media 100" pretty much illustrate that folks who think in terms of insider clubs and short lists of influential people don't seem to really understand what is fundamentally important about a read/write web and the new age of the amateur.

Could we please have the "long tail" meme back? Open media, whatever it is, will not be a hits business. This idea of paying extra notice to a small clique of A lister friends is a waste of all of our attention.

Anyone who plays this game pretty much declares which side they are on.
